Some Tricks to Improve your Conversion Ratio

Conversion ratio is simply the ratio between the number of visitors that arrive on your site vs. the number of sales that are generated through these visitors. It’s a common consensus that normally it is around 1%. This figure of 1% is rather small and does not translate into real dollars unless you either have high traffic or a high margin product. Sounds like a gloomy venture, but there is some light at the end of this tunnel. My goal is not to be a statistic and I want to maximize my conversion ratio, and so do you. There are certain guidelines that you may follow in order to improve these statistics. If implemented properly you may achieve a conversion ratio of even up to 10%.

Maximizing your conversion ratio is the last thing you must do. Therefore you must have done and completed all the other steps in marketing your site successfully and have a decent amount of qualified hits before you can really see the benefits of increasing your conversion ratio.

So how can I achieve this you ask? Here goes:

  1. First and foremost you have to take a step back; every site owner thinks that his/her site is the best. This is far from being true. Objectively analyzing your site is the first step in achieving success. Put yourself in your users’ shoes and go through your site and rate it from a users’ perspective. This will provide you some insight onto the pitfalls that your site might have.
  2. Make sure that your homepage is designed properly in order to be able to convey your message to your visitor quickly and concisely. Your visitor must know what you are offering on your site instantly. If they have to guess, you need to rethink your layout and how the information is presented. Also, simply explaining your product or service is not enough. You must also let them know right away why your products or services are better than your competitors.
  3. Make sure that your site passes the functionality test as well as the usability test. Get rid of unnecessary eye candy that will distract your user from what you want them to absorb. Easy navigation and back links are a must.
  4. Get rid of all popups.
  5. Think carefully about your color scheme. Color schemes should be picked according to the feel you want your site to have. Blue is always a good color since it evokes feelings of trustworthiness, success and seriousness.
  6. Have facts to backup your claims. Customer testimonials with real people are a great source of building credibility. Make sure you mention the client’s full name as well as company (if applicable).
  7. One main issue regarding online businesses is that humans in nature want to deal with tangible things. Virtual businesses are intangible and can easily mislead potential clients. Therefore, if you clearly mention the name, address and telephone number of your business on your website, you will build yourself credibility. Clients will know that they can contact you if they need to.
  8. Get your own domain. Avoid using free web hosting services like Geocities or tripod.
  9. Offer a clear and reasonable money back guarantee. This will further your credibility.

Credibility is the key. There are many frauds online and a lot of users have been burned so they are skeptical. Be transparent and open with your visitors in order to make them feel comfortable buying from your site. Also, being part of organizations such as the better business bureau and being certified by a credit card company will help you build your credibility online.
